Scotland Road Trip 2020
Like many others, the pandemic interfered with our travel plans massively in 2020. By the time it got to Autumn, and the travel restrictions were eased a little more, my partner Izzie and I thought it would be a great opportunity to take a trip to Scotland for the week.
We’ve been planing to get our own camper van for some time now. The idea started out small and eventually escalated into us looking into the big Sprinter/Crafter size vans complete with a toilet and shower. Basically a tiny house on wheels.
Since we’d never actually stayed in one, we thought the best way to experience Scotland (for the first time I might add), would be to hire a similar camper van to the one on our vision board and give the vanlife a 7-day trial before committing to a few years of ownership! We found our van on the Airbnb or motorhomes and camper vans www.goboony.com

Starting our journey in the East Midlands, England, after picking up the hire camper van, we set off on an 8 hour journey to the West Coast of Scotland. Our first stop was Kilchurn Castle - An abandoned castle built in the mid 1400s on the edge of Loch Awe.
By the time we got there it was 8:30pm and pitch black. We found a suitable camping spot for the night, which from what we could see in the headlights looked more like a disused quarry yard rather than a car park. After settling in we tucked into a nice dinner, followed by a slightly restless sleep. Reality had finally sunk in that we were in the back of a van in the middle of absolutely nowhere. The only lights you could see out the back window were the stars that blanketed the night sky.
The next morning, we pulled up in a lay-by right around the corner which had incredibly scenic views of Kilchurn Castle and its mountainous backdrop. It’s hard to imagine what life would have looked like here during the castle’s glory days.
After exploring the area and taking photos of the castle, it was time for a cup of tea and bacon sandwich back at the van before making our way up to our next stop, Glencoe. Click here to read the next story: Glencoe, Scotland
